Rehousing and re-cataloging archival or archaeological collections.
Conducting historical and archival research on items within the Applied Anthropology Laboratory's collection.
Conducting historical and archival research related to Indigenous Peoples' histories within North America.
Digitizing and describing archival materials.
Potential for other projects related to archives, curation, museum collections, etc.
Students with specific interests or looking for experience in other areas of museum, archives, archaeology, or related fields are encouraged to apply.
Attributes/skills/background sought in undergraduate:
Interest in museums, archives, archaeology, history, or related fields. (No experience in these fields necessary)
Must be comfortable with asking questions or for clarification.
Experience with conducting historical or archival research.
High attention to detail and organization.
Effective written and oral communication.
Experience with writing and revising.
Self-motivated and eager to learn.
Experience with Excel and Word.
Mentoring Plan:
The student researcher will work 5 hours per week on the project, including a one-hour 1-on-1 meeting with me. The student will check in at the beginning of each shift with to discuss research assignments and review completed work. The first weekly meeting will include AAL and project-specific orientation. All other weekly meetings will relate directly to the research activities assigned and outlined above. Each research assignment will be introduced by Gilaspy or co-developed with the student researcher. Projects will have written and verbal instructions provided by Gilaspy. The student researcher will be expected to fully track and document all project related research. Research may be conducted in the AAL or Bracken Library. Student researcher may work with other AAL student employees on some assignments. Students will be expected to perform meaningful research and produce quality work, while being fully guided and supported by Gilaspy.
