Department: Chemistry

Research Focus: The Sammelson Lab focuses on Organic Chemistry for reaction methods development (organic synthesis) and molecules with potential biological activity (medicinal chemistry).  Specific projects have focused on the formation of carbon-carbon bonds and the synthesis of heterocycles.

Potential Student Project(s):

  • Malononitirles used for the reductive alkylation reaction and other carbon-carbon bond forming reactions.
  • Synthesis of the lavendamycin derivatives and potential anti-tumor activity.

Attributes/skills/background sought in undergraduate:

  • Interest in chemistry and possibly medicine
  • Attention to detail for making observations in lab.
  • Hard working.

Mentoring Plan: Mentoring will include side-by-side training and work with me in the laboratory.  Training will also be given on safety in the laboratory and on using instrumentation.  Research group meetings will be used to practice communication of research results, understanding about others projects, review literature/journal club, and working organic chemistry problems.
