Research Focus: Research on emergency management and homeland security policy implementation in the United States.
Potential Student Project(s):
I do research on federalism and how it impacts the ability for local governments into prepare for/respond to potential disasters of all varieties. I.E. what do local government do to recognize potential hazards in their jurisdictions and if mandates from the federal and state governments help/hurt these efforts. For instance what did local governments do to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic? How do local emergency management agencies work with other local government offices, such as public health departments? Why do local emergency management officials comply with some/all federal policy expectations? All of these questions would be wrapped in in a student project using several quantitative datasets that I have developed. I am looking for someone to help with research and literature review. Quantitative testing could be included as well should a student have an interest in statistical modeling, but it is not required.
Attributes/skills/background sought in undergraduate:
I am looking for a student with a strong interest in research, and perhaps a future career in social science research and/or graduate school. A student with a particular interest in United States governance and/or emergency management would be preferred.
Mentoring Plan: The student researcher will perform by doing a literature review on contemporary emergency management/homeland security policy in the United States as well as research in the realm of federalism and public policy implementation. If a student has an interest in quantitative statistical modeling that can be included as well. But most research will eb into public policy language/debate as well as scholarly research in the field. The student will spend at least 5h/week on the project. This would include a one hour meeting with me each week.
