Department: English
Research Focus: I am working on a new book project in the early stages about Irish “lunatic” asylums and the gender politics of institutionalizing women, as depicted in contemporary Irish literature
Potential Student Project(s):
A student in this role would be asked to do research on topics related to Irish asylums and Irish writers, which may include interlibrary loans of books or articles, retrieving these texts from the library, and making an annotated bibliography. I also might ask the student to find and organize sources using MLA format, or to take writing of mine and check/perfect the MLA format and works cited page. The main job would be researching, obtaining, and organizing source material.
Attributes/skills/background sought in undergraduate:
The student needs to be VERY solid in MLA and/or Chicago format, and able to look things up to format correctly. They will also need to be comfortable using university databases, requesting ILLs, and organizing sources in folders on Box. They should be able to write an annotated bibliography with summaries and pulled quotes. They should have familiarity with Google Docs and Box, or willingness to learn. I am not interested in working with AI at all for this project.
Mentoring Plan:
In our meetings, I will ask for updates on tasks already given, give new tasks, and also talk about your goals and progress towards those goals. I will expect that you email me with documents/sources I've asked for and/or put them in Box. It is expected that students put 5hr/week towards working on this project, with 1hr spent in a meeting with one's mentor.
