Research Focus: My research focuses on developing flexible programming supports that higher education institutions can implement to improve access, participation, and graduation of autistic college students. My research project title is Cultivating the Academic, Personal, and Social Success (CAPS2) Mentor Program at the Ball State Center for Autism Spectrum Disorder (CASD). The project focuses on identifying the type and degree of services and supports needed, as well as, developing, implementing, and evaluating a combination of models and approaches for leveraging existing campus and community resources in order to improve sustainability, through CAPS2, we explore the impact of individualized and group mentoring on student goal achievement across academic, personal, and social domains.

Potential Student Project:

  • Establish meeting Determine what, when, where, and how often we will meet individually and with project staff.
  • Identify mentoring and project related Discuss long and short-term goals and identify action steps to achieve goals, who will be responsible, and timeline for each.
  • Identify skills mentee wants to improve or those that might benefit the Explore resources and opportunities to facilitate skill development.
  • Identify professional development opportunities that support the mentee accomplishing expressed goals through trainings, workshops, conference participation,
  • Identify methods for communicating schedule changes, personal or project related problems, and
  • Communicate policies and procedures for collaborating and participating in Discuss confidentiality, best practices for working with autistic students, CASD and University policies for conducting research with human subjects, and person-centered programming.
