Dr. Jennifer Erickson (Anthropology) and Dr. Molly Ferguson (English) introduced students to the role of gender in post-conflict zones by considering the unique histories, political economies, demographics, art, literature, and cultures that contribute to violence. Through travel and study, they learned about and experiences how the aftermath of conflict affects systemic inequality and everyday life. Students visited a variety of key sites, had interactive experiences, and met a variety of actors (politicians, educators, and leaders of nonprofit organizations), who educated them about the role of gender in the aftermath of The Troubles (1968-1998) in Northern Ireland and the Yugoslav wars in the 1990’s. Students learned to make informed comparisons of the post-conflict sites they visited and how the countries represent them today through tourism and commemoration.
