Beth led a group of 14 students in the spring 2010 semester to create a musical based on the novel Circus in Winter by Indiana author Cathy Day. The seminar adapted the novel—set in a fictionalized version of Peru, Indiana—to stage for performances in both Muncie and Chicago.
Students worked with nationally known playwrights (Suzan Zeder, Distinguished Play Award for The Taste of Summer and author of Mother Hicks), musical publisher (Ken Dingledine, vice president of Samuel French Publishing Company), author Cathy Day, and Tony nominee actress Sutton Foster.
The seminar presented its musical in Muncie as a fundraiser for its community partner (Big Brothers and Big Sisters) and in Chicago at the Drury Lane Theater as an alumni scholarship performance. They will also submit their musical to the New Play Festival in New York City. The project has a long-term goal of a fully realized production as part of University Theatre's 2011-2012 season at Ball State University.
