AI Use Guidelines

Ball State University has established the following guidelines to help our community use Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools responsibly and ethically as they engage in their work. These are living guidelines and are continuously updated as new information is received. All information is subject to change. For feedback and questions, please email: ai@bsu.edu.

  • If generative AI use is permitted, students are encouraged to complete Step 1: Should I use AI? and Step 2: How should I use AI responsibly? before using GenAI tools for coursework. These checkers are designed to help students review appropriate GenAI use, data privacy, academic integrity, attribution, disclosure, and responsible decision-making before submitting work.
  • Completion of the checkers does not automatically mean GenAI use is permitted on every assignment.
  • Students must still follow the GenAI Statement their instructor selected for the course, assignment-specific directions, instructors' guidance, and Ball State University’s Student Academic Ethics Policy.
