Thomas Hall
Assistant Professor of Musical Theater, Voice
Thomas Hall is an Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre Voice, teaching voice lessons and related musical theatre courses in the Department of Theatre and Dance. A singer, voice teacher, music director, pianist, and music educator, Thomas brings more than two decades of experience cultivated in private studio teaching, K–12 music education, higher education, and professional musical theatre to his work with emerging performers.
As a music director and music supervisor, Thomas has worked extensively with professional and educational theatre, including productions at Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts and Ball State University. His work encompasses vocal preparation, score preparation, orchestral rehearsal, conducting, keyboard performance, audition accompaniment, and the adaptation of musical materials to meet the needs of performers and productions. He has also performed in opera, operetta, musical theatre, and concert settings.
Thomas's teaching and scholarly interests center on healthy and sustainable vocal development for musical theatre performers, particularly the relationship between vocal pedagogy, repertoire selection, and the developing adolescent voice. His research examines the appropriateness of musical theatre repertoire for young performers and the ways in which repertoire can either support or hinder healthy vocal development. His doctoral research has focused particularly on repertoire written for adolescent male-presenting voices.
Thomas is completing his D.A. in Voice Performance with a secondary emphasis in Musical Theatre from Ball State University, an M.M. in Opera Performance from DePaul University, and a B.A. in Music and Church Music from Indiana Wesleyan University.
