About Josco Mast
Mr. Josco Mast is a Deaf educator and American Sign Language (ASL) instructor whose work centers on Deaf-centered pedagogy, language equity, and culturally responsive teaching in higher education. As a native ASL user, he integrates lived Deaf experience with academic training to support students in developing both linguistic proficiency and cultural competence. His teaching philosophy views ASL not only as a language but as a vital expression of Deaf identity, community, and visual ways of knowing. His professional interests include ASL pedagogy, Deaf culture and history, critical language teaching, and the preparation of students to engage respectfully with Deaf communities.
Professional Experience
Mr. Mast serves as an Instructor of American Sign Language at Ball State University, where he teaches undergraduate ASL courses and contributes to the development of students’ communicative competence through immersive, visually grounded instruction. His courses emphasize interactive learning, authentic language use, and integration of Deaf cultural perspectives to create accessible and inclusive learning environments.
In addition to his university teaching, Mr. Mast has engaged in educational initiatives connected to Gallaudet University that support Deaf education and sign language teaching practice.
