About Donnie Brooks

Mr. Donnie Brooks is an ASL educator dedicated to teaching American Sign Language while fostering a deeper understanding of Deaf culture, Deaf history, and Deaf education. Raised in an oral environment while mainstreamed, his perspective shifted after meeting a Deaf person who signed. That experience inspired him to devote his work to giving back to the Deaf community and supporting students as they explore language, culture, and identity. A graduate of Gallaudet University, Mr. Brooks is committed to creating meaningful connections between the Deaf and hearing worlds through education. His teaching emphasizes cultural knowledge, language development, and community engagement, with particular care for Deaf and hard of hearing students who may be navigating experiences similar to his own in shaping their cultural identity.

Professional Experience

Before returning to Ball State University, Mr. Brooks taught ASL at Indiana University Indianapolis, where he was also involved with ASL Club and enjoyed helping students engage with ASL beyond the classroom. With experience teaching ASL 1–5, he now teaches both undergraduate and graduate ASL courses at Ball State. Mr. Brooks brings energy, experience, and a strong sense of community to his teaching, inviting students to learn ASL in a way that is engaging, meaningful, and connected to real-world culture.
