Department: Music Education
Research Focus: I am looking at ways in which music educators teach percussion within a large ensemble setting (or otherwise). I am also interested in document analysis in qualitative research and the ways in which researchers use documents as artifacts.
Potential Student Project(s):
This project would allow you to advance your research skills using databases, journals, books, and other media. Work would primarily include completing initial research of preexisting works, and writing literature reviews, annotated bibliographies, and summaries of findings. You would also have the opportunity to learn about document analysis in qualitative research within the field of music education in general.
Attributes/skills/background sought in undergraduate:
General familiarity with entry level research techniques and a willingness to learn would be helpful. You do not need to be a musician to be successful here, but an interest in music education would probably be beneficial as you will be looking at music-specific works. An understanding of academic writing and the ability to summarize literature would also be helpful, but not a prerequisite. Strong organizational skills are necessary.
Mentoring Plan:
The student will work on this project for 5 hours each week. One of these hours will be a mentoring session with me in which we discuss research techniques, findings, writing style, and document analysis.
