Helping students achieve academic success and personal growth through safe, comfortable, affordable, and diverse living and learning communities is our mission. We believe that living in the residence halls and eating at dining locations offering numerous choices is a good value, especially when you take into account all of the services automatically included in the room and board rates.
Types of Plans and Contracts
The Standard Plan is a one-year commitment to living in the residence halls. At the end of that year, students have the option to sign another standard (or premium plan) contract.
- Rates are for both fall and spring semesters and include a meal plan.
- There is a Residence Hall Technology Fee of $60 per semester.
- Single and Triple Rooms are available for returning students only.
- All rates include a $7 per semester activity fee.
How would you like a great way to save money, keep college expenses down, and increase the value of your on-campus living experience?
By signing up for the Premium Plan, your housing and dining fees are frozen for two years. This offer helps you avoid the increases that normally occur for the second year. And based upon availability, if you want to request a room upgrade for year two of the contract, you will be able to do so at the first year's rates.
Ultimately, students who sign up for premium plans save an average of $800 over the two years.
Lots of Perks
The Premium Plan also provides additional benefits just for you:
- Early Move-In – Members of the Premium Plan may move into the residence halls a day early for the fall semesters. This can help you avoid long lines that are sometimes associated with the regular opening day.
- Priority Room Sign-Up – Plan members have the option of priority residence hall room sign-up for the second year. Several residence halls are very popular places for students to call home and often are filled early by returning students. For the second year of the plan, Premium Plan members may choose to select available spaces before they are offered to students in their priority date group who are not participating. (This is based on your housing deposit date.)
- Additional Dining Funds – This includes $90 towards dining per semester!
Plan Cost
Absolutely nothing extra! There are no additional contract charges for these services and benefits. We want to provide students with the opportunity to maximize their on-campus housing and dining value.
How to Sign Up
Choose the Premium Plan option when submitting your housing and dining contract.
By selecting and submitting your wish to be part of the Premium Plan, you extend the term of your housing and dining contract for the 2022-23 and the 2023-24 academic years.
Important
Summer semesters are not included in the plan. Also, the Premium Plan is a continuous two-year contract and cannot be extended if a student leaves for an academic program, such as student teaching or study abroad.
The Premium Plan will continue to be available to individuals living in the residence halls for the 2022-23 academic year. Special cancellation charges are outlined in Section 7 of the Ball State Housing Contract.
By increasing the number of people living on campus, we are able to pass these savings on to Premium Plan members. Please remember that when you sign the Premium Plan contract, you will be expected to fulfill the terms of the contract. Please review your housing and dining contract for terms and conditions.
Because Ball State's room and board contract is considered a legal, binding document, students are strongly encouraged to review the contract prior to signing. Students will sign an electronic contract when first agreeing to live on campus. This contract will be updated during the online room sign up period when students agree to the terms and conditions electronically.
Review the contract terms and conditions for the term you are planning to live on campus.

Break Closing Information
All residence halls will close for the breaks implemented into the academic semester (i.e. fall and spring). During these breaks, students do not need to remove all of their personal items and belongings from their residence hall room. Removal of all personal items and belongings from a student's residence hall occurs in the spring at the end of the academic year.
End Of Academic Year Check-Out Procedure
Before you leave campus, you must check out with a hall staff member when you are ready to leave. Being ready to leave means you have packed up your belongings, cleaned your room, and you’ve rearranged your furniture back to its original layout. When these steps are complete, please go to the front desk in your residence hall.
At the front desk you will:
- Scan a self-checkout QR Code
- Sign your Room Inventory Form
- Drop your room key off with the front desk worker
Keys: Your room key must be turned in to a hall staff member before departing from campus. Do not mail keys after you have left. If you do not turn in your key prior to departing, you will be charged a fee for re-coring your room.
Mail: Please forward your mail to your permanent address and stop placing online orders to your residence hall by May 1. Non-USPS Packages that are not picked up will be considered abandoned property.
The Office of Housing and Residence Life is not responsible for forwarding packages on behalf of students or handling non-USPS Packages that are not picked up. Packages that are handled through the United States Postal Service (USPS) will experience a delay between arriving at the residence hall and being sent to the provided forwarding home address.
Abandoned Items/Recycling: If you have items (clothing, small appliances) and non-perishable food that you do not wish to take home, please consider donating these items. Check at your residence hall desk for the donation site for your building. Donated items will be given to local charities.
Quiet Hours: 24-hour Quiet Hours begin at midnight, Friday, April 29, and end at 8 p.m., Saturday, May 7. Courtesy hours are daily from noon-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. You are encouraged to dismantle all lofts/bunk beds before Quiet Hours begin.
Summer Housing
If you are taking summer classes at Ball State, Studebaker East will be available for summer residence hall housing. More information and an application for summer housing can be found here.
Questions?
If you have additional questions about our rates, plans, or calendar, please contact us.
Please note: The rates reflected on our website are updated once approved by Ball State University's Board of Trustees. To understand the process of how and why rates are set and approved, please read the detailed information below.
Each year, a committee of staff members representing the university's Business Affairs and Student Affairs and Enrollment Services divisions meets to create a proposal for residence hall room and board rates for the coming academic year. The proposal is based on anticipated operating expenses, facility maintenance expenses, student programming needs, and other costs. The suggested rate is then proposed to the Ball State Board of Trustees for review and final approval. Room and board rates are the same for residents of Indiana and from other states.
Housing and Residence Life and Ball State Dining are self-sustaining units and are expected to generate all revenue for both operational and capital improvement expenditures. They receive no taxpayer support. As stated in the Housing and Residence Life Mission Statement and the Dining Value Statement, both areas make every effort to operate in as cost-effective a manner as possible and work very hard to keep an annual rate increase to the lowest possible amount so room and board remains accessible to all students.
