Course Overview
The minor in piano centers on applied piano study, core musicianship coursework, piano specific literature and pedagogy, and ensemble experiences. You will take multiple semesters of private lessons (MUSP 203 Minor Study) focused on healthy technique, stylistic interpretation, and building a representative repertoire across musical periods. Supporting courses in music theory, sight singing and ear training, and music history help you understand how your pieces work, hear musical structures, and place what you play in broader historical context. You will also choose from upper level options in piano literature and/or elementary piano pedagogy, and you will participate in large and small ensembles (including options such as accompanying or chamber music) while fulfilling recital attendance requirements through MUSC 499 Recital.

What You’ll Learn
Develop reliable pianistic technique, including tone production, finger independence, articulation, pedaling, and healthy practice habits that support long term growth. Expand your knowledge of keyboard repertoire across style periods, gaining experience with works appropriate to your level and interests while learning how to prepare them efficiently. Strengthen core musicianship through music theory and aural skills, improving your ability to read scores, understand harmony and form, and learn music quickly and accurately. Gain historical and stylistic perspective through music history coursework, connecting piano pieces to the composers, eras, and performance practices that shaped them. Explore keyboard specific topics such as piano literature and/or elementary piano pedagogy, which introduce you to major composers, teaching strategies, and materials for beginning and intermediate students. Build collaborative skills by participating in ensembles and accompanying or chamber music experiences where you work closely with other instrumentalists and vocalists.
What Majors Pair with This Minor?
Because it combines focused applied study with flexible ensemble and literature/pedagogy options, the Piano minor complements a variety of majors. It is especially helpful for students who want strong keyboard skills to support teaching, collaborative work, or creative projects.
Common pairings include:
- Theatre, Musical Theatre, or Dance, for students who may accompany rehearsals, work in collaborative settings, or benefit from stronger musical literacy and rehearsal skills at the keyboard.
- Non music majors in areas such as Education, Communication, or the Humanities who want a rigorous, credit bearing way to continue piano study and develop creativity, discipline, and performance confidence.
