YOU HAVE THE POWER To Change Lives

EQUITY AND
Excellence

In Indiana, only about seven percent of public school teachers are non-white. Most are female, and most only speak English. We are incredibly grateful for the service of all teachers. However, the lack of equity and diversity creates missed opportunities for a more meaningful education for all students.

Equity means addressing the systemic barriers that create lopsided faculty demographics. It also means making sure that a child’s opportunities are not limited because of social and cultural identities, economic class, or neurodiversity.

Equity and excellence are our guiding values at Teachers College. We are in a unique position to advance those values to pre-K-12 classrooms throughout Indiana. But we need the involvement of all TC supporters through Our Call to Beneficence.

FUNDING Opportunities

INCREASED SCHOLARSHIPS FOR UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS: $10M

The cost of college is a significant reason why pre-K-12 classrooms are not more diverse. Some young people with a passion to teach never make it to college. Others get there but drop out because the financial burden is too high. Those fortunate enough to graduate often leave saddled with student debt that poses a threat to their teaching careers.

We don’t have the resources to give all our students the level of help they require. With your help, we will create more scholarships for deserving students. In doing so, we will be able to recruit more students from underrepresented backgrounds.

DISTINGUISHED PROFESSORSHIP OF EQUITY AND INCLUSION IN EDUCATION: $3M

One reason few college students of color choose education as their major is that they don’t feel at home in the academic program. One important way to tackle this problem is to create an endowed Distinguished Professorship of Equity and Inclusion in Education.

This professor will add to our efforts to diversify our faculty; develop and engage students in instruction and research focused on inclusion; and advance equity, diversity, and inclusion within schools. The endowment will also fund innovative course assignments; service projects; and workshops for faculty, students, and staff.

SUPPORT FOR AUTISM OUTREACH AND RESEARCH: $5M

In 2018, over 15,000 pre-K-12 students in Indiana qualified for special education under the category of Autism Spectrum Disorder—an increase of more than 2,000 students from five years prior. Ball State has long been a leader in the autism community. We excel at preparing teachers of students with autism, and we are a leader in autism research. We even host a free summer day camp to prevent learning loss in students with autism. With your help, we will create a $5 million endowment to make sure these critical autism programs always have the funding they need.

Outreach and experiential learning activity to support families with kids on the spectrum
COMMUNITY-ENGAGED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL STUDENTS: $5M

Community-engaged learning opportunities take TC students out of the classroom and into the real world where they engage in authentic experiences with children and families from a variety of backgrounds. Unfortunately, every semester, many students graduate from Ball State not having had a true community-engaged experience. With your help, we will expand existing programs in Muncie, develop new programs in Indianapolis, and provide scholarships to cash-strapped students who must choose between employment or a learning opportunity.

EQUITABLE EDUCATION INITIATIVE: $3M

By advocating for schools to embrace equity and excellence, the University can create an environment in which all children enter adulthood prepared for fulfilling careers and meaningful lives. We launched the Equitable Education Initiative in 2021 to help Teachers College better prepare teachers for integrating equity and excellence into the classroom. Your gift can support the initiative in:

  • Expanding faculty and student research into equity and diversity
  • Improving teacher education and professional development by incorporating best practices for equity and diversity
  • Increasing community outreach and service by Teachers College faculty and staff
