Suzy Smith

Suzy Smith is an Associate Professor of Media at Ball State University. Smith teaches courses in news and sports writing, reporting and multimedia story presentation, specializing in news and sports delivered via multiple storytelling formats.
Smith has created many immersive learning opportunities for students including a baseball journalism course where students travel to Florida to cover spring training. She also helped create a course designed to give students more live reporting opportunities. This course is now a regular part of the curriculum. Smith also helped lead an immersive experience to China in 2010 and accompanied student journalists to the Olympics in 2012, 2014 and 2016 mentoring them as they provided content to professional partners.
Smith has served on the national board of the Broadcast Education Association. She has served as co-director of three Study of the U.S. Institutes for Student Leaders on New Media in Journalism (2011, 2012, 2013), a U.S. State Department program that brought students from Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines to Ball State.
Before joining Ball State Smith spent more than 24 years in the news industry as a senior producer with CNN.com, a senior producer at the Weather Channel, a supervising producer with CNN/Sports Illustrated, and a producer with CNN Sports. Smith earned her Bachelors from Central Michigan University and her Masters from Georgia State University.
