Ball State Fee Remissions

If you are a Ball State employee, you may qualify for tuition and fee remissions for yourself, your spouse, and your dependent children.

Graduate assistantships and doctoral fellowships are available to qualified graduate students. Graduate assistants and doctoral fellows receive a stipend and a partial fee remission for the academic year.

Students interested in applying for these positions should contact the Graduate School or their respective academic departments for detailed information.

Students hired to be residence hall assistants qualify for housing and dining (room and board) waivers. Residence hall assistants are students assigned to a particular section of a residence hall to promote the academic and personal development of students living there.

The Indiana fee remissions listed here involve regularly assessed fees required of all students as defined by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE).

These waivers were established under the Indiana Child of Veteran and Public Safety Officer Supplemental Grant Program administered by CHE.

The state of Indiana requires that students file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit any required documentation. Graduate study is paid at the undergraduate tuition level.

Fee overload charges are not covered.

This is awarded to Indiana residents who are children of veterans disabled or deceased as a result of active duty service during a period of wartime.

The recipient is entitled to receive the benefit for up to 124 semester hours of undergraduate or graduate study.

The information and criteria for this award are the same as the Child of Disabled or Deceased Veteran Award.

The award information and criteria for both the child and the spouse are the same as for the deceased public safety officer program. A surviving spouse is entitled to the benefit for undergraduate study only in a degree program, regardless of the number of hours enrolled.

This fee remission is awarded to students from the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Children’s Home (ISSCH).

The recipient is entitled to receive the benefit for up to 124 semester hours of undergraduate or graduate study. An application must be filed with the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs. You must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit any required documentation in order to receive this waiver.

This remission is awarded for undergraduate study to children of Indiana residents who became prisoners of war in the Vietnam War or who are missing in action.

You must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid and submit any required documentation in order to receive this waiver.

This remission is awarded to the children or surviving spouses of the following who were killed in the line of duty:

  • regular, paid law enforcement officers
  • regular, paid firefighters
  • volunteer firefighters under Indiana Code 36-8-12-2
  • county police reserve officers
  • city police reserve officers

In addition, the police officer or firefighter must have been an Indiana resident and covered under the 1977 Police Officers' and Firefighters' Pension and Disability Fund.

The child, who must be enrolled full-time in a degree program, is entitled to this benefit for both undergraduate and graduate study until he or she reaches age 23.

A surviving spouse may only use this remission for undergraduate study in a degree program.

To receive this benefit, an application must be submitted to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE), W462 Indiana Government Center South, 402 West Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204.

CHE will verify eligibility with the pension and disability fund.

To receive this waiver, you must also file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

This remission is awarded to the children or spouses of state troopers permanently disabled in the line of duty. The trooper must been an Indiana resident and covered under the 1977 Police Officers' and Firefighters' Pension and Disability Fund.

The child, who must be enrolled full-time in a degree program, is entitled to this benefit for both undergraduate and graduate study until he or she reaches age 23.

A surviving spouse may only use this remission for undergraduate study in a degree program.

To receive this benefit, an application must be submitted to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE), W462 Indiana Government Center South, 402 West Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204.

CHE will verify eligibility with the pension and disability fund.

To receive this waiver, you must also file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Indiana residents who are at least sixty (60) years of age, retired, not employed full-time, taking 9 or fewer credits per semester, and are not eligible for University fee remission programs, are eligible for a 50% waiver of the basic tuition, and student services fee. Online, Distance Education, and Independent Study course work is also included. Mandatory lab, program, course, and other special fees for University courses or programs are not covered by the fee waiver.

All student-athletes are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA can be completed online at studentaid.gov

Student-athletes who are not receiving a full Athletic Grant-in-Aid are encouraged to complete the FAFSA by the April 15 priority deadline each year to ensure that they are considered for funding from as many aid programs as possible.
