Joshua Langman is an award-winning author, educator, theatrical designer, typographer, and scholar of design. He is the author of Standby: An Approach to Theatrical Design, a unique practical philosophy of design for the stage that was hailed as “nothing short of groundbreaking” by Amanda Gronich of Tectonic Theater Project and “a valuable tool for young designers” by the Broadway scenic designer Beowulf Boritt. Standby is the first book to propose a unified, holistic theory of contemporary theatrical design. It has been recognized as an
“Outstanding Academic Title” (Choice) and as a selection in the AUPresses Book, Jacket, and Journal Show, among other honors.

As a professional theatre artist, Joshua has designed lighting, sound, and projections for the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Shed, the New Victory Theatre, the Center for Puppetry Arts, Mass MoCA, Ensemble Studio Theatre, the Castillo Theater, Teátrica, Brooklyn Gypsies, the 52nd Street Project, the Jim Henson Foundation, and dozens of other companies and venues in New York City and across the country. His design work has been featured in the La MaMa ETC Puppet Festival, the Center at West Park Object Movement Festival, and Planet Connections Theatre Festivity. He was the resident projection designer on Throughline Artists’s annual Summer Shorts festival at 59E59 Theaters, where he designed world premieres of plays by Neil LaBute, Eric Lane, Chris Bohjalian, Robert O’Hara, and other noted contemporary playwrights. He has a longstanding collaborative relationship with singer-songwriter Cidny Bullens; he has designed lighting for Jonathan Groff in concert; and he consulted on JourneyLab’s immersive production Revenants, a long-running hit in Moscow. Joshua is the design and technical consultant to Khunum Productions, an interdisciplinary theatre company devoted to creative anthropology. He was also a founding member of Electric Eye Ensemble, a New York–based feminist devising collective.

Joshua has lectured and facilitated workshops on design at Carnegie Hall and has spoken at the Drama Book Shop and the Players, the nation’s oldest private social club for theatre practitioners. Before joining the faculty at Ball State University, Joshua originated the theatrical design program at Talent Unlimited High School, a performing arts school in Manhattan, and subsequently taught for several years in the Kean University Theatre Conservatory. He has also been a guest artist at Fordham University and Sarah Lawrence College. Joshua has a master’s degree in theatre education from the City College of New York and a bachelor’s degree from Sarah Lawrence College, where he studied design intensively under Greg MacPherson, Jill BC Du Boff, and other renowned designers.

Joshua is currently working on two new book projects. His major work of historical and textual scholarship, The Annotated Robert Edmond Jones, is under contract with McFarland & Company. His other project, tentatively titled Pretext for a Dream, will be an anthology of short writing on theatre and design.
