Dance Mission Statement

The Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science (BA/BS) degree in dance supports students in developing a broad knowledge of dance and applying it to other areas of interest in diverse ways within a liberal arts environment. We aim to create well-rounded and versatile human beings and dance practitioners that bring unique visions and changes to the dance world through their passions.

The BA/BS in dance is customizable to your educational experience, integrating dance with other areas of interest by allowing students to declare multiple majors and/or minors. Students have the opportunity to focus on dance pedagogy with our pedagogy and advanced pedagogy courses and through a teaching assistant position for our dance courses. Other opportunities include choreography, choreographer assistant positions, dance history and research, body conditioning and anatomy, and a plethora of dance technique courses such as West African, hip-hop, jazz, tap, musical theatre dance, ballet, and modern. Our dance program values all movement techniques equally and offers various levels in all forms while emphasizing learning opportunities that facilitate creative collaboration and deliver transformative experiences.

The dance program takes a proactive approach to career preparation. Throughout the 4-year program, students develop a portfolio of work and create a personalized senior capstone, which allows students to combine their passion for dance and prepares them to transition from college to a professional dance career. As a student in our undergraduate-only program, you will have opportunities to perform each semester.

The BA/BS dance major does not require an audition for admittance, but it is highly recommended to participate in the audition process for placement in dance classes and scholarship consideration. Students must be academically admitted to Ball State in order to receive an offer in the area of study. Audition, interview, and application information is below under Take the Next Step.
