At Ball State, we offer two distinct degree paths for students pursuing a major in dance: the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science (BA/BS). Each program is designed to be student-centered, encouraging exploration, curiosity, and personal growth as you prepare for a future in dance.

Our curriculum evolves in response to student input and the ever-changing dance industry. Through both structure and flexibility, we create space for students to chart their own paths—while benefiting from the rigor and support of an 8-semester plan.

BFA in Dance

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Dance is designed for students seeking intensive, pre-professional training. This program provides a strong foundation in technique, performance, and choreography while fostering artistic growth and career preparedness.

What You’ll Learn

BFA students complete 83 credit hours within the major, focusing on:

  • advanced technique and performance training
  • choreographic development and creative process
  • opportunities to perform in campus productions and off-campus venues

With a structured eight-semester plan, students can customize their experience in their junior and senior years to align with post-graduation goals. Double majoring is possible with careful planning, though some degree pairings may be more challenging due to the program’s rigorous schedule.

BA/BS in Dance

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BS) in Dance provide a flexible, liberal arts approach to dance education. These programs emphasize pedagogy, choreography, and theoretical studies while still offering opportunities for performance.

What You’ll Learn

BA/BS students complete 50-52 credit hours within the major, with coursework focusing on:

  • dance pedagogy and teaching methodologies
  • choreography and movement analysis
  • dance history and theory
  • performance opportunities with a reduced technical training requirement

This program is ideal for students interested in double majoring or combining dance with other disciplines. Past students have paired this degree with business (studio ownership) and psychology (dance therapy) to align with career goals.
