Dr. Adam Berland is a professor of geography in the School of Earth, Atmosphere, and Sustainability. His research focuses on urban forestry and urban greening, geospatial data analysis, and the dynamics of human-environment systems. Dr. Berland has conducted applied research to help guide the management of urban systems, including projects related to innovative techniques for inventorying publicly managed trees and mapping changing patterns of housing deterioration in postindustrial cities. He has published dozens of peer-reviewed studies (many with student co-authors), and his research has been supported by national and regional funding sources.

Dr. Berland teaches courses in geospatial science and technology along with urban geography. His project-based courses prepare students for careers in geospatial science and technology, as recognized by Ball State’s Immersive Learning Faculty Award. Dr. Berland earned degrees from the University of St. Thomas (BA) and the University of Minnesota (MA, PhD), and he completed a postdoctoral research associateship at the US Environmental Protection Agency.
