Mission

The purpose of the Peace Plaza is to serve as a memorial to all who have fallen victim to violence. Recognizing that violent conflict occurs at all levels of society and across the globe, we aspire for the Peace Plaza to serve as a place to remember, reflect, and work toward a more peaceful society and world.

Goals

  • To become the focal point on campus and in Muncie for relevant memorials
  • To commemorate past tragedies in the United States
  • To celebrate diversity
  • To create a special and unique space where an individual can stop and reflect on what peace means to them in their everyday, personal life
  • To provide a designated location where a wide array of units on campus and groups from Central Indiana can display appropriate banners and flags to commemorate relevant anniversaries or promote activities and events

Vision and Materials

To build a civic-scaled sculpture whose design, especially its use of materials is informed by the current pallet of materials on campus such as those used in the Frog Baby Fountain (e.g., limestone, granite, stainless steel, bronze).

Eight peace poles will be constructed and installed in the Plaza. The first pole that represents Indiana has already been installed. Another pole representing Asia will be built in the near future. The remaining six poles will represent the other six continents, Once all seven continent poles have been constructed, the Plaza will be symbolic of people from all corners of the globe.

The Plaza also will include plaques to describe the mission of the space and to acknowledge the donors.
