Research Focus: Physical education teacher preparation, coaching education, physical activity promotion, and effective instructional practices
Potential Student Project(s):
Students will gain hands-on experience in physical education, coaching, teaching, and research while working alongside a faculty mentor. Projects will vary throughout the semester and may include assisting with research related to physical education, physical activity, coaching, and school-based movement; helping collect, organize, and summarize research information; and contributing to ongoing doctoral research.
Students will also get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to prepare future teachers and coaches. They may help develop class activities and teaching resources, organize equipment and labs for practicum experiences, assist with assessment and grading preparation, and explore how technology and AI can support teaching and learning.
Another part of the experience will focus on promoting Ball State’s Physical Education and Health Teacher Education program. Students may help create social media content, highlight student and alumni experiences, take photos or videos at program events, and develop recruitment materials.
This experience is designed to help students explore possible careers, build professional skills, learn how research connects to real-world teaching, and become more involved in the Physical Education and Health Teacher Education program.
Attributes/skills/background sought in undergraduate:
Seeking a dependable, curious, and motivated student with an interest in physical education, health, coaching, teaching, or physical activity. Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills are preferred. No previous research experience is required, just a willingness to learn, contribute ideas, take initiative, and try new things
Mentoring Plan:
My mentoring approach will focus on helping the student build confidence, professional skills, and independence through hands-on experiences. We will meet regularly to discuss current projects, establish weekly goals, answer questions, and reflect on what the student is learning. Early in the semester, I will provide guidance and examples as the student learns about research, college teaching, physical education and coaching programs, and professional responsibilities. As the semester progresses, the student will have opportunities to take greater ownership of tasks and contribute their own ideas to research, teaching resources, program promotion, and practicum support. I will provide ongoing feedback while also helping the student connect these experiences to their academic interests and potential career goals. Whenever possible, the student will observe or participate in classes, labs, meetings, and program activities to better understand the many roles of a university teacher and researcher.
