Research Focus: My research interests focus on culturally sensitive health promotion and health care with the goal of preventing and reducing chronic disease among racial/ethnic minority and low-income communities.
Potential Student Project(s):
The student project will center on work with the Healthy Lives for Indiana Youth (HLIY) Project and the Youth Community Health Worker (Y-CHW) Training Program being implemented at a local community high school. Tasks may include: (1) implementing a health status survey study, (2) training Y-CHWs, and (3) collecting evaluation data.
Attributes/skills/background sought in undergraduate:
(1) Major/minor in public health or interest in learning more about community-based research in public health; (2) Willingness to complete tasks as assigned by mentor; (3) Communicates well with adolescents or willing to learn how to communicate with this population; and (4) Enthusiastic, responsible, and self-motivated.
Mentoring Plan:
1. The student researcher will commit to working 5 hours per week on the project. Tasks related to the project, including survey and evaluation data collection and participation in training sessions. -
2. Meet one-on-one weekly for 1 hour either in-person or remotely. - Discuss new project tasks and progress on previous tasks.
3. Work with the student researcher on a study that can be presented at the Ball State Student Symposium or a health-related conference. - Develop and submit an abstract for presentation.
