Founded in the early 20th century by philanthropic industrialists, Ball State University has grown into a world-class university with highly respected programs in education, architecture, business, communications, fine arts, sciences and humanities, and the health professions. Our rich, compelling history and values are shaped by icons and legends and our legacy and future is defined by our community.


Bright Future

Ball State is named after the five brothers who donated land to the state of Indiana  to establish the University in 1918. The Ball brothers—Lucius, William, Edmund, Frank, and George—were industrialists and philanthropists who moved from New York to Indiana to expand their glass containers business.

The Ball family's legacy is symbolized by our beloved bronze-winged statue, Beneficence. Nicknamed "Benny" by our students, she embodies Ball State's core values. Her wings represent the power of education taking flight, which directly corresponds with our tagline, "We Fly."


Welcoming Spirit

Charlie Cardinal is Ball State's official mascot. Charlie enthusiastically brings spirit and energy to athletic events and is an ambassador for the University.

In true Cardinal style, it's tradition for our students and alumni to greet each other with "Chirp! Chirp!"
