Music in the 21st Century

The School of Music recognizes the importance and value in entrepreneurial learning. As the professional landscape for music in the 21st century changes, musicians must increasingly rely on their ability to spearhead fulfilling artistic endeavors and create employment opportunities for themselves.

The certificate in entrepreneurial studies in music provides you with a safe environment where you can take creative risks; develop entrepreneurial, marketing, networking, and grant-writing skills; and learn from successful artists. The program will teach you how to better manage and navigate the increasing demands on 21st century musicians by blending a curriculum of both music and business courses.

Open to both undergraduate and graduate students, the certificate can be completed in tandem with undergraduate and master’s degree programs and as a doctoral secondary area.

The undergraduate certificate in entrepreneurial studies in music may complement the course work for any four-year bachelor’s degree offered by the School of Music.

At the undergraduate level, the certificate requires 14 credit hours of study and will take at least two years to complete. You may also need to extend your program of study beyond the traditional four years to complete all requirements.

Courses from both the School of Music and Miller College of Business provide students with a solid foundation in business, marketing, management, and entrepreneurial skills needed to succeed as professional musicians.

The graduate certificate in entrepreneurial music serves as an add-on to the course work of master of music (MM), master of arts (MA), or artist diploma students. Upon acceptance into a graduate music degree or artist diploma, you may apply for admittance into the certificate program.

This two-year certificate requires 17 credit hours of study and offers courses from both the School of Music and Miller College of Business. Upon completion, you will gain a solid grounding in business, marketing, management, and entrepreneurial skills needed to succeed as a professional musician.

With competition for university-level positions increasing, the need for new and innovative approaches to teaching in higher education places a new set of demands upon music faculty.

Doctor of arts students may apply to the entrepreneurial music program as their secondary area of study. It will provide them with the groundwork to incorporate new and innovative elements into their curriculum and teaching style. As a secondary area, the certificate accounts for 15-17 credit hours of a doctoral student’s curriculum.

Learn from Visiting Professional Musicians

A significant component of both the certificate in entrepreneurial studies in music and artist diploma is the annual artist residency program. The School of Music hosts innovative, cross-disciplinary, and nationally renowned entrepreneurial musicians and ensembles.

These musicians work closely with School of Music students and present workshops and classes that focus on arts start-ups, transitioning from college to a career, new composition readings and performances, best recording practices, identifying and applying for grants, and marketing strategies. Artists also present master classes and performances, and they often coach individual students and chamber-music ensembles.
