Cynthia Smith
Assistant Teaching Professor of Music (Voice)
Mezzo-soprano and music educator Cynthia L. Smith is an active recitalist and researcher of Holocaust music and the music of underrepresented composers. She is in demand as a guest lecturer and presenter, consultant, and author regarding music and the Holocaust. As part of this research, she was awarded with a Fulbright US Student Award in musicology, where she studied the Theresienstadt compositions of Viktor Ullmann in Basel, Switzerland through The University of Basel and The Paul Sacher Stiftung. Her work concerning music of the Holocaust is internationally cited and recognized.
Cynthia Smith has performed recitals in the United States, Austria, India, and Switzerland. She also has appeared on stage with Asheville Lyric Opera, Knoxville Opera, and Marble City Opera. Recently, she gave recitals and masterclasses in southern India at The Bangalore Conservatory in Bengaluru and KM Music Conservatory in Chennai. Additionally, she is an active vocal competition adjudicator at local, regional, and international levels, primarily with the National Association of Teachers of Singing.
Currently, Cynthia Smith teaches at Ball State University in Muncie, IN as Assistant Teaching Professor of Music (Voice). Prior to BSU, she taught Western-classical music for almost five years at KM Music Conservatory. Her former voice students successfully perform, compete, and study at national levels in India, New Zealand, The United States, and The United Kingdom. Her former students are at the forefront of the Indian music and film industries.
Cynthia Smith studied at Tennessee Tech University, Cookeville (BM); Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, NC (MM); Ball State University, Muncie, IN (DA); and The University of Basel, Switzerland (Fulbright).
