Nathan Hitchens joined the Department of Geography as an instructor in 2013. He earned his BS and MS in geography from Ball State University, and his PhD in atmospheric science from Purdue University. His teaching interests include meteorology, climatology, and geographic information systems (GIS).

Prior to his return to Ball State, Nathan served as a National Research Council postdoctoral research associate at the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Oklahoma. His research interests include the characterization and prediction of extreme hourly rainfall and the evaluation of severe weather forecasts. Nathan is currently working with the NOAA NWS Storm Prediction Center and Oklahoma University's Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies on a project to develop a verification package for the SPC's convective outlook products. He has presented his research at both national and international conferences related to severe weather.
