Ball State graduate and former late night talk show host David Letterman will return to campus to present “Clear Reception with David Letterman,” a documentary about the art of glass. The result of a yearlong immersive learning project, the film chronicles Dave’s foray into glass artistry with the making of a special piece inspired by his everyday life.
After the documentary is debuted, Dave will be joined on stage by Academy Award-winning director Morgan Neville for a discussion. Dave and Neville worked together on the Disney+ documentary “Bono & The Edge.” Neville has directed a number of feature-length documentaries, including “20 Feet from Stardom,” which won an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature in 2014.
“Clear Reception with David Letterman” was produced in collaboration with Ball State students in the Department of Media, Center for Emerging Media Design & Development, and Schools of Art and Music. The film also features artists from the Marilyn K. Glick Center for Glass, who teach Dave about the evolution of a grain of sand to a beautiful piece of glass art. Ball State School of Music students composed and performed the original score for the film, and students in the Center for Emerging Media Design & Development created a transmedia campaign that will be on display in the Emens Auditorium lobby before and after the premiere.
Recent Ball State graduates Ameliah Kolp and Faith Denig served as writer/director and producer for the film, respectively. The 2022 graduates will participate in the Q&A with Dave after the film.
The documentary and transmedia project represents the latest installment of the David Letterman Learning Experience an annual student-led, interdisciplinary creative project that explores the intersections between storytelling, technology, and art.
