Ball State University on Saturday celebrated its Class of 2023 with a traditional Spring Commencement ceremony held on the Old Quad. The University conferred nearly 3,000 doctoral, specialist, master’s, and baccalaureate degrees for its Spring 2023 graduates.

The University will present the documentary, “Clear Reception,” at 7 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2023, at Emens Auditorium on Ball State’s campus. Following the screening of the film, Mr. Letterman will conduct a Q&A with two Ball State graduates who served as director and producer of the piece, respectively.

The Ball State University Foundation has revealed the University’s Top 10 students from its second annual “Top 100 Student Awards” program. This annual award recognizes 100 outstanding junior and senior undergraduates who represent the spirit of Beneficence, Ball State’s institutional statue and icon that symbolizes the generosity of the five Ball brothers whose land donation to the State of Indiana allowed the University to flourish.

The inaugural event of the Ethan Whitehead Guest Lecture in Sustainability series is scheduled for March 20 at Ball State University. The guest lecturer is Dr. Billy Fleming, the Wilks Family Director of the Ian L. McHarg Center in the Weitzman School of Design. Dr. Fleming is a senior fellow with Data for Progress and co-director of the “Climate + Community Project.”

Kelli Huth will rejoin Ball State University as associate vice president for community engagement, effective Jan. 17, Dr. Charlene Alexander, chief strategy officer, announced. Ms. Huth is succeeding Delaina Boyd, who retired from Ball State in December after 32 years of service.

Indiana Gov. Eric J. Holcomb announced he has reappointed Henry Hall and Rick Hall to the Ball State University Board of Trustees. Both members were reappointed to four-year terms, which are effective through 2026.

Ball State University’s School of Journalism and Strategic Communication inducted into its Journalism Hall of Fame Don Yaeger—an author, journalist, executive coach, and internationally recognized keynote speaker; and Leisa Richardson—executive editor of the State Journal-Register in Springfield, Illinois. Ms. Richardson is the first African American woman inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame.

A Ball State University graduate who became a pioneering Black educator and champion of civil rights in Indiana has received one of the University’s highest honors. Annie Burns-Hicks received the President’s Medal of Distinction from Ball State President Geoffrey S. Mearns in recognition of her historic legal battle to become the first Black school teacher in Hammond, Indiana.

Ball State University May 2022 graduate Alexa McDonald, of Hilliard, Ohio, has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in recognition of her accomplishments in academics, athletics, extracurricular activities, and community service. A member of Ball State’s Swimming and Diving team from 2018-2022, Ms. McDonald was one of only 21 female Spring sport athletes nationwide to receive this $10,000 scholarship.

Ball State University and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL) have selected the first two recipients of a first-of-its-kind scholarship program for esports student-athletes. The Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Scholarship provides $5,000 annually to two members of Ball State’s varsity esports team each year from the 2022-23 through 2025-26 academic years.

Preliminary figures indicate the University received more than 7,000 gifts totaling more than $1 million during its annual 24-hour online fundraising event, providing much-needed support to the financial needs of students, faculty and staff, and programs.

Financially challenged Ball State University students studying to become K-12 math and art teachers are eligible for new scholarships, thanks to the generosity of the late Bill and Evelyn Stokes. Last Fall, the William and Evelyn Stokes Foundation reached an agreement with the Ball State University Foundation to give $1 million in scholarships over the next four years to an unspecified number of students who demonstrate financial need.
