Ball State University offers Open Housing in select residence halls. These spaces offer a living environment for students who choose to live with any roommate of their choice. Students may indicate their interest for this option when completing the housing application. Availability is limited.

Open Housing is a housing option available to all students that allows individuals the flexibility to live with the roommate of their choice - no matter who it is. This option is open for everyone, including siblings, close friends, or any individuals who wish to share a space together and make their on-campus living experience fit for them. Students part of Open Housing will share a bathroom pod with others who have chosen this living option. Please keep in mind that space is limited and not always guaranteed.

Any student who is comfortable living with a roommate of any gender can choose Open Housing.

Open Housing is available throughout several of our residence halls.

If demand exceeds availability, we may not be able to accommodate all requests. To increase the likelihood of securing a space, students are encouraged to apply for housing early and indicate their interest as soon as possible.

Students that are a part of Open Housing will share a bathroom pod with others who have also chosen this living option. Open Housing bathroom pods are not designated by sex. Bathroom pods include a shared sink area and individual, floor-to-ceiling enclosed toilet and shower stalls to ensure privacy. To learn more about the bathroom options available, please visit the web pages for our individual residence halls.

Yes, students are required to have a roommate to live in Open Housing. Students who opt-in to Open Housing are required to select a roommate who has also opted into the Open Housing. Open Housing roommates are not required to be the same sex. Students who are unable to secure an Open Housing roommate, may be reassigned to a standard housing assignment with a roommate of the same sex.
