Artificial intelligence is moving so fast that knowing how to build it is no longer enough. Organizations are under pressure to build it responsibly. Ball State University's AI Theory and Ethics online graduate certificate prepares you for both sides of that equation: the advanced theoretical foundations that make AI work and the ethical frameworks of using AI.
Intermediate Level Experience Recommended
This intermediate level online graduate certificate is designed for working professionals with a solid computer science background and are ready to move beyond the basics. You’ll build the critical foundation required for success in machine learning, AI-driven systems, and responsible technology leadership.
If you do not have solid foundational knowledge in computer science, such as a bachelor’s degree or career experience, we recommend taking the beginner level online graduate certificate AI Foundations: Data Analytics and Machine Learning.

What Does Intermediate Level Experience Mean?
Intermediate-level experience means you already have foundational knowledge in programming and computer science concepts and are prepared for graduate-level AI coursework.
You may meet this background in one of these ways:
Submit the Coursera enrollment form so Ball State advisors can help review and verify prerequisite pathways, including Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), prior degrees, or completion of the Python for Everybody specialization.
What You'll Study in the AI Theory and Ethics Online Certificate
The three-course online certificate in AI Theory and Ethics explores the theory and ethics powering modern AI systems. The career-aligned curriculum equips you with practical, in-demand AI skills in a flexible format.
Courses include:
- CS 602 Discrete Structures and Algorithms – Strengthen your computational thinking with the mathematical frameworks that underpin AI and machine learning systems. Prerequisite: CS 601, CS 617, Credit for Prior Learning, or Python for Everybody Specialization.
- CS 603 Responsible and Human-Centered AI – Examine the ethical dimensions of AI development: fairness, accountability, bias, transparency, and the real-world societal impacts of intelligent technologies.
- CS 626 Topics in Artificial Intelligence – Explore advanced AI concepts, including problem-solving, knowledge representation, and intelligent system design. Prerequisite: CS 601, CS 617, Credit for Prior Learning, or Python for Everybody Specialization.
A Credential That Stacks
The AI Theory and Ethics online certificate is part of Ball State's intentionally designed sequence of stackable AI credentials:
Stage 1 (Beginner Level) → AI Foundations: Data Analytics and Machine Learning graduate certificate
Stage 2 (Intermediate Level) → AI Theory and Ethics graduate certificate
The certificates stack directly into the fully online MS-CS at Ball State, meaning the work you do here counts toward a full master's degree when you're ready.
This structure is built for how modern learners actually learn — progressively, flexibly, and on their own timeline.
