Nationally recognized by The Education Trust as a “Transforming School Counseling” Program, our Master of Arts in School Counseling prepares you for licensure as a school counselor at all grade levels, as well as to be a change agent in pre K-12 schools.
2017-2018 Program Evaluation, Modifications, & Updates
Our program will help you develop a professional identity as a school counselor with particular focus on social justice and equity in schools. You’ll experience a range of theoretical perspectives and also be challenged to view students as embedded in a complex system that inevitably shapes their everyday lives.
Intensive, supervised practica and internships are required, providing real-life work experience in the application of prevention, intervention, and evaluation techniques in pre K-12 schools.

Upon completion of the program, you are eligible for a school counseling license from the Indiana Department of Education. You must apply to be recommended by the Teachers College Office of Teacher Education Services to receive a standard grade license for school counselor, issued by the Indiana Department of Education. A school services license allows you to serve as a counselor at all grade levels (preK-12). Learn more.
You’ll work closely with a faculty of leading experts in their fields.
Our program is designed to foster student growth and development through coursework and over 800 hours of field-based experiences in practicum and internship.
Social justice and advocacy are at the core of the training experience and are a common thread in every class.
The MA Program in School Counseling is approved by the State of Indiana and structured to education students in accordance with the Indiana school counseling licensure requirements as well as standards set forth by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA).
You'll need to demonstrate competence in eight common core areas and three school counseling specialty areas in alignment with Indiana school counseling licensure requirements as well as standards set forth by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA).

Practica and Internships
Practicum and internship experiences focus on the development of comprehensive school counseling skills which individual and group counseling, consultation, collaboration, and teaming, advocacy, and leadership. These skills, which are taught throughout the school counseling program curriculum, are guided by Indiana school counseling licensure requirements as well as standards set forth by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and are further developed and reinforced in field experiences.
Your training experiences will occur in a series of applied settings including elementary and secondary schools, summer camps, and Pre-K educational programs.
