Model Preparations for the Ring Heliodon:
Check restrictions on modeling materials listed under
facility rules. Models for the ring heliodon can be made in a conventional manner. The appropriate size of the model may be limited due to a very small area of accuracy with this device. Adjust the constructed scale of the model appropriately. For an explanation, check out the "
Which Heliodon to Use?" section for an explanation. The area within the model which can be studied at any given time will be a maximum of 12" wide x 12" long x 6" high. Sub-portions of larger models may be studied by placing a part of the model in the device's zone of accuracy. The table has a flat circular surface 4' in diameter. Models that are higher than 15" may encounter physical interference with the ring and lamp mechanisms.
Model Preparations for the Platform heliodon:
Models for the
platform heliodon must tolerate being tipped on their edge or even upside down without falling apart. The model must also clamp to the table's surface to avoid movement when the table tips. This usually requires the model to be attached securely to a thin base that extends beyond the edges of the model's area of interest. Clamps are provided for securing the model to the table. Two types of clamps are provided. One will clamp materials as thick as 6.5" and will reach 2.25" in from the edge of the table or model. The other will clamp materials as thick as 3" but will reach 4.5" in from the edge of the table or model if necessary. The table surface itself is a ¼" thick rectangular aluminum plate that is 3' in length in the model's north-south axis and 2' in width in the model's east-west axis.
