At Ball State, Alice was a member of the Clavia Society, which became a chapter in the Mortar Board Society. She also was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

Joe took pre-dental courses beginning in 1948 at Ball State. He graduated in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in dentistry from Indiana University and earned his DDS from Indiana University in 1955. At the IU School of Dentistry, Joe was elected to the dental honorary society of Omicron Kappa Upsilon.

The Rinards were graduates of Farmland High School and annually recognize the valedictorian and salutatorian from Monroe Central High School in Randolph County, into which their alma mater consolidated. They also are members of the IU President's Circle.

Availability of the scholarship is dependent upon an award selection process established by Ball State and its academic departments.
