Veteran Ball State faculty member Mitch Whaley has been named dean of the
College of Applied Sciences and Technology (CAST) .
Whaley's appointment as dean takes effect May 12. Currently, he is the chairman of the School of Physical Education, Sport, and Exercise Science, a position he has held since 2002.
"I've been a faculty member in the college for the past 22 years, and I'm looking forward to leading an academic unit with such popular undergraduate and graduate programs," Whaley said. "The college's enrollments have grown consistently during the past five years to the point where CAST is now the second largest enrolled college on campus."
Terry King, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said Whaley has a significant record as a scholar and teacher and is confident he will excel in his new administrative position.
"Mitch will be a great asset as we work to build on the forward momentum CAST is generating and further define the mission of the college," he said.
Whaley began teaching at Ball State in 1986. Over the years, he also has served in various leadership roles at Ball State's Human Performance Laboratory, overseeing its adult physical fitness programs from 1986 to 1995. Whaley earned his doctorate from Indiana University, his master's from Ball State and his bachelor's degree from Texas Tech University.
"My immediate goals as the new CAST dean center on facilitating the college's activities associated with the university's strategic plan goals, particularly in the areas of education and scholarship," Whaley said.
