Begin by identifying your faculty research mentor: Identify an affiliated faculty member who is willing to serve as your research mentor prior to gathering your remaining application materials. This will require you to contact appropriate Environmental Sciences faculty to discuss your research interests and opportunities for funding. If a faculty member agrees to be your research mentor, then they will work with you to complete the required Application Processing Form (PDF).

Then complete your application by uploading the following required materials to your Cardinal Landing Portal:

  • Application Processing Form (PDF): See above. This form must be submitted by your Faculty Sponsor.
  • Resume or curriculum vitae (most recent): provide a current curriculum vitae detailing your professional and educational history, among other qualifications.
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Statement of purpose: introduce yourself, your interests and motivations, summarize your undergraduate career, discuss your recent and current activities, and elaborate on your academic interests.
  • Writing Sample: share a peer-reviewed publication that you wrote (ideally first author), or a thesis. If neither is available, then submit a report or something substantial (and ideally scientific) that you wrote.
  • Transcript/credential evaluation showing complete academic history: learn more about our transcript/credential evaluation requirements.
    • You must have a master's degree or higher from an institution recognized by a USDE accrediting association.
    • You must have earned a minimum of a 3.2 GPA from the master's degree-granting institution.
