Application Term: Fall
Application Deadline: February 15

To complete your application, you will need to upload the following required materials to your Cardinal Landing Portal:
  • Curriculum vitae (most recent)
  • Three letters of recommendation: provide names and email addresses for three references. We will send them instructions on what information they need to provide for your application. Both professional and personal references will be accepted; however, at least two of your designated references should be able to speak to your academic ability and research experience.
  • Writing sample: you are required to submit a sample of your academic writing. This sample can be of any length but should showcase your ability as an academic writer. Examples could include an undergraduate or masters level research paper, chapter(s) of a senior or masters thesis, or published manuscript on which you are the first author. This should be an academic writing piece and not a creative writing or opinion piece.
  • Statement of purpose or letter of intent: submit a professional statement that addresses the following topics. Please make sure your statement is well written, edited and approximately 500-1000 words.
    • Why are you interested in our PhD in Educational Psychology? Why Educational Psychology and why Ball State in particular? Why is this program a good fit for you?
    • What do you hope to do with your PhD? What are your career aspirations?
    • Describe research projects you have worked on. In addition, briefly describe the skills you acquired through your research experience.
    • What are your current research interests and how would a PhD in educational psychology help you to pursue these interests? Please discuss possible research questions and populations of interest.
    • Identify and rank between one and three professors from the BSU Educational Psychology faculty with whom you would like to conduct research.
    • Briefly, indicate why you ranked the professor(s) the way you did. (Although your responses will not commit you to a faculty member or topic, the educational psychology core committee will use the information you provide to evaluate your fit with the program. You may contact these faculty directly if you want to find out more about their research and if they would be willing to accept students.
    • Please describe any additional qualifications that may not be obvious from your transcripts or other materials that you believe would be beneficial to your application to our program.
