Ball State University Libraries welcome gifts of books, media and other information resources supporting the instructional and research programs of the university.
It is recommended that you discuss your potential donation with Michael Twigg, Head of Collections Development.
Review Process
University Libraries review gift collections carefully and judiciously select or decline materials according to collecting policies. University Libraries normally do not accept restrictions from donors regarding shelving, access, or processing of gifts.
Donated materials become the property of Ball State University Libraries, which reserve the right to dispose of gift materials in whatever manner best serves the interest of the University and the Libraries.
Valuation and Acceptable Materials
University Libraries cannot provide appraisals of gifts. A donor wishing to claim a tax deduction should consult applicable Internal Revenue Service regulations, or a qualified tax professional.
University Libraries do not accept the following:
- outdated textbooks
- materials in poor condition
- popular magazines
- mass-market paperbacks
- pulp fiction
- superseded formats (LPs, VHS tapes, software, etc.)
- duplicate titles, unless they are in high use or an otherwise special edition

Donating Archival Collections
Ball State University Archives and Special Collections accepts donations of archival collections and materials of enduring historical research value pertaining to the Archives’ main collecting areas—Ball State University history, Muncie and Delaware County history, and the history of Indiana’s build environment.
The Archives is also interested in collecting other special collections of historic materials of exceptional research value.
Archives and Special Collections relies on the generosity of community members in continuing to develop and preserve valuable historical materials.
