Our Services

At Ball State, we prioritize building trust and fostering supportive relationships. We are committed to this crucial aspect of your college experience. Student Athlete Support Services accomplishes this through learning services, academic coordinators, connections with your coaches, and eligibility certifications.

Learning Services

Overview

Our study hall programs are designed to support students as they transition from high school to college-level coursework—a significant adjustment for many.

  • First-Year Students are required to complete 8 hours of study hall each week throughout your first year. You'll need to check in and out, and your progress will be monitored through weekly reports sent to your coaches.
  • Continuing Students who need or seek additional support may join our objective study hall program. This involves working closely with an academic mentor to meet specific academic goals. Students required to attend these hours are assigned based on historical academic success.

Collaboration with the Learning Center

We partner with the campus Learning Center to offer a wide range of tutoring services, including individual and group tutoring, as well as scheduled and drop-in sessions. The Learning Center provides exceptional resources that have contributed to record-setting GPAs among our student-athletes.

  • Personalized Support: Each student-athlete is paired with an academic coordinator throughout their academic journey at Ball State. Students have regular meetings with their coordinator every semester. Coordinators are assigned based on teams and are the go-to resource for problem-solving, accessing the right resources, and staying accountable.
  • Ongoing Monitoring: Your academic coordinator also plays a key role in conducting weekly grade checks and liaising with your coaches. Many coaching staffs have regular meetings with academic coordinators, creating a robust support network for our student-athletes.
  • Specialized Support: While every Ball State student is assigned an academic advisor, student-athletes are assigned a SASS academic advisor who is uniquely equipped to address the specific challenges faced by student-athletes. From managing practice schedules to ensuring the optimal sequencing of your classes, their goal is to support academic success.
  • Expert Guidance: SASS advisors are well-versed in Ball State’s curriculum, including majors and minors and how these relate to future career and life goals. We provide tailored advice to help students make informed decisions about their academic path.
  • Additional Resources: You will also have access to an advisor specializing in your chosen academic major. This provides you with the opportunity for in-depth discussions and additional support, should you wish to explore your field more thoroughly.

At Ball State, we value teamwork and recognize the importance of a unified support system. In addition to your academic team, we collaborate closely with your coaching staff to ensure a holistic approach to your success.

Furthermore, we engage with coaching staffs during the recruitment process, which means you and your family might have already interacted with us! This prior connection facilitates a smoother transition as you join our institution.

SASS is responsible for certifying continuing eligibility, working in tandem with the Ball State Athletics Compliance Office. We also participate in NCAA professional development to stay updated on the latest rules and regulations regarding eligibility.
