Studying mathematics encourages students to think abstractly and to appreciate the beauty of mathematical structures. It also hones persistence, logical thinking, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills. This makes mathematics a versatile concentration that can lead to fulfilling careers not just in mathematics, but in actuarial science, data analytics, statistics, law, economics, computer science, and medicine. The demand for mathematics professionals continues to rise in an increasingly technology-driven world, ensuring a promising job outlook. A mathematics concentration offers both intellectual fulfillment and good long-term career prospects.

Course Requirements

Students in either concentration of the Major in Mathematics begin with a common collection of required courses providing a strong foundation in the mathematical sciences. Course work includes the study of calculus, linear algebra, discrete systems, differential equations, probability, numerical analysis, abstract algebra, and real analysis. Over the course of their studies, students will gain experience with current mathematical software and programming languages. As part of the capstone seminar, MATH 498, every student has the opportunity to research a topic beyond the standard undergraduate curriculum.

Students choosing the Mathematics Concentration (Concentration 1) build breadth by selecting three further courses from the areas of Algebra/Number Theory, Geometry/Topology, and Analysis/Differential Equations, and then round out their major with 9-10 credits of electives.
