Ball State University offers a bachelor of fine arts in graphic design through the School of Art in the College of Fine Arts. 

Why choose the graphic design BFA degree?

  • Studio-based curriculum: Develop design concepts and technical skills through sequenced foundation, intermediate, and advanced courses.
  • Client-based projects: Eligible students may work with clients through Studio 165+, during our student-run design studio course.
  • Portfolio progression: Complete introductory graphic design study and a continuance review before advancing in the program.
  • Senior capstone: Develop a senior design campaign that integrates research, strategy, visual communication, and production.

What you’ll study as a graphic design major

Students begin in our First-Year Foundations Program which nurtures their interests and skills through classes in drawing, 2D, 3D, and 4D. Our introductory Graphic Design course prepares students for the portfolio continuance review at the end of the first year. Intermediate courses dive deep into the theories, techniques, and strategies of Graphic Design and advanced courses explore publication design, motion graphics, and UI/UX.

The program begins with foundational study in:

  • drawing
  • two-dimensional design
  • three-dimensional design
  • four-dimensional and time-based design
  • global art history
  • professional preparation in the arts

Additional graphic design coursework addresses:

  • design research and concept development
  • typography and visual hierarchy
  • graphic design systems
  • web design
  • motion graphics
  • publication design
  • identity systems and applications
  • user interface and user experience

Graphic Design BFA and Graphic Design Studies BS

We offer two undergraduate graphic design degrees.

The bachelor of science in graphic design studies combines graphic design with graphic communications and production coursework.

The bachelor of fine arts in graphic design is requires some studio coursework, foundations study, and advanced design courses.
