Permits for Departments

Departmental permits are available to Ball State University departments. The number of permits assigned to each department is based on the number of employees. 

Departmental permits are to be used only for for short-term parking (2 hour maximum), errands, and deliveries away from your normal work area.  They are not intended to be used for parking outside your building.  Departmental permits are not intended for long-term parking needs, nor are they to be issued to specific people—they are to be shared by the entire office.

Departmental permits are virtually linked to your department; however, it must be display on your windshield.  In order to properly associate a departmental permit to a vehicle, that vehicle must also be associated with a valid faculty/staff or student permit.  These permits are not intended for visitor use.  

How to Display

The person using the permit must display their current faculty/staff or student permit. The departmental permit should be displayed on the lower corner of the driver's side of the front windshield.

Locations

  • yellow faculty/staff lots
  • green commuter lots
  • metered spaces (without paying) for 2 hours maximum

Departmental permits do not allow parking in:

  • red restricted lots
  • blue housing lots
  • disabled driver spaces
  • any restricted area
  • fire lanes, driveways, or any spot indicated with a "No Parking" sign
  • service vehicle spaces
  • loading docks past the 20-minute time limit

Violations

Users or departments found misusing the permit will be subject to a progressive disciplinary process.

  1. The first violation will be a warning.
  2. The second violation will be a department fine and an Improper Registration citation to the user.
  3. The third violation will be revocation of the privilege of having a departmental permit as well as possible revocation of the user’s parking privileges.

Request Permit

If your department is hosting a guest or event, you can purchase visitor permits ahead of time. 

Visitor permits may not be used by Ball State employees or students.  Violators are subject to a citation and parking privilege revocation. 

Locations

Visitor permits can be requested for the following lots.  However, there is a limit of 3 total permits per day in each restricted lot.  This means a specific restricted lot may not be available if another department has already requested permits for that lot.  Parking Services will contact you if your requested lot is not available.

  • Yellow faculty/staff & green commuter lots
  • R2 – Petty/McKinley
  • R4 – Rec Center/Health Center
  • R6 – New York garage (First floor metered area)
  • R7 – McKinley Avenue garage (First floor metered area)
  • R8 – Student Center garage (First floor metered area)

Cost

  • $5 per day for less than 100 permits
  • $15 per permit for a weekly permit
  • $3 each for 100 permits or more

 How to Request a Permit

Please allow 48 hours for permit processing.  In order to request visitor permits, you will need the visitor's name/event name, dates of visit, and your department's FOAPAL.  For more information on visitor permits, call 765-285-1208.
