Margaret L. Hosey, a professor emerita of psychology and educational psychology, has created a scholarship fund for nontraditional freshmen at Ball State University.

The Hosey Scholarship will be made available to incoming students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. It is renewable for up to three years if the student continues to meet the academic criteria.

Hosey began her college education at the University of Wisconsin during the Great Depression. At first she struggled monetarily but found relief when she was offered free room and board by becoming a House Fellow for undergrad students. She earned her bachelor's degree in community leadership and her master's degree in education, guidance and personnel work.

Hosey's career accomplishments include serving as the head director in a women's residence hall in Des Moines, Iowa; director of education in a Congregational church in Madison, Wis.; director of the college union in Buffalo, N.Y.; dean of Milwaukee's Downer College and director of student activities at Ball State.

While at Ball State, Hosey also was responsible for new student orientation and taught in the psychology department. She stayed at Ball State for the remainder of her career. During her last summer of her career, she taught an Air Force sponsored graduate program in Hans, Germany, and just before retiring, married her husband, Herbert Hosey.

Availability of the Hosey Scholarship is dependent upon an award selection process established by Ball State and its academic departments.
