Family members of a former Ball State faculty member have contributed more than $75,000 to a scholarship fund in her name.
Harold and Margie Malmberg recently left their estates to Ball State University's Helen Sornson Elementary Education Scholarship fund.
The scholarship fund was created to honor Sornson upon her retirement in 1973 from Ball State. Sornson was highly respected as an educator of teachers for the economically and culturally deprived and as an educator of teachers for preschool children.
Margie Malmberg, Sornson's sister, earned a library science degree from the University of Wisconsin and an advanced degree at the University of Minnesota.
Harold Malmberg received his engineering degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and went on to serve in the Army during World War II.
Married after the war, the Malmbergs moved to Toledo, Ohio, in 1960 where they remained until their deaths. Margie worked with the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library for 16 years, retiring in 1976.
The scholarship is for students majoring in elementary or secondary education, psychology or special education. Applicants must be of junior or senior standing with an accumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher and demonstrate financial need.
