Lyrical, imaginative, and deeply moving, Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea blends poetry, humor, and ritual into a powerful contemporary myth. Eighteen-year-old Dontrell Jones III feels called to the ocean—to seek out an ancestor lost during the Middle Passage and confront a history that still echoes in the present. As he prepares to embark on this impossible journey, his family struggles to hold him close, caught between love and fear. This haunting and hopeful play explores legacy, identity, and the courage it takes to face the past in order to move forward.
