A Public Keynote on Purpose, Belonging, and Meaning

The Center for Economic & Civic Learning (CECL) invites you to an evening with Emily Esfahani Smith, bestselling author of The Power of Meaning.

In a culture that often equates success with happiness alone, Smith offers a deeper and more enduring framework for a meaningful life. Drawing from psychology, philosophy, literature, and civic life, she explores the four pillars of meaning — belonging, purpose, storytelling, and transcendence — and how these foundations cultivate resilience, character, and democratic vitality.

Her work has appeared in major national publications and has sparked conversations across campuses, workplaces, and civic institutions about how individuals and communities can thrive in times of uncertainty and fragmentation.

This event is part of Ball State’s ongoing commitment to civic learning, character development, and the pursuit of lives oriented toward purpose and contribution.

The first 100 individuals who register will be entered into a drawing to receive one of 20 complimentary copies of The Power of Meaning. In addition, five registered attendees will be selected for a private dinner conversation with Emily Esfahani Smith following the event.

Seats are limited. Registration is encouraged.
