Athletic Training and Nursing students assess a patient in the Welcome Home Suite.

Clinical Education

Our comprehensive program equips students with the practical skills necessary for patient care through a combination of clinical rotations and clinical immersion experiences.

During Clinical Rotations, students gain exposure to diverse athletic training settings while meeting a required minimum and maximum number of hours per semester.

In contrast, Clinical Immersion involves full-time participation in athletic training experiences that provide students with a thorough understanding of the complete scope of responsibilities in a particular setting. Our program offers students the opportunity to complete these experiences nationwide without interrupting in-person, synchronous coursework.

Our program boasts three Clinical Immersion experiences totaling 36 weeks, surpassing the minimum four weeks required by most athletic training programs. The immersive experiences are scheduled as follows:

  • First-year Summer: no clinical experience
  • First-year Fall: four 4-week rotations in a variety of clinical settings in the greater Muncie area
  • First-year Spring: two 8-week rotations in the greater Muncie area
  • Second-year Summer: 10-week clinical immersion
  • Second-year Fall: 12-week clinical immersion
  • Second-year Spring: 14/15-week clinical immersion

This program gives students practical experience and knowledge that sets them apart in their athletic training careers.

Simulation and Standardized Patient Experience

We provide our students with more than 16 simulations and standardized patient encounters. These immersive learning experiences are designed to create a safe environment for students to gain valuable skills in patient care. Our state-of-the-art simulation spaces in the Health Professions Building are equipped to provide students with the best possible training.

  • Simulations are educational interventions that recreate real-life scenarios, giving students the opportunity to participate in realistic situations with their peers.
  • Our standardized patient encounters utilize trained individuals to consistently portray patients to numerous learners, allowing for a more comprehensive learning experience.

After these learning opportunities students debrief with each other and faculty to evaluate the experience.
