Mickie spent over a decade as a Professor for Ball State University before joining advising in 2023.  In his time as a professor, he spent most of his years learning the curriculum and systems to ensure students can complete their degree programs as efficiently as possible. He has also spent his summers with advising serving as an orientation advisor for incoming first year students. He is originally from Louisiana and earned his undergraduate degree in Louisiana. He also studied in Virginia and lived briefly in Kansas before moving to Muncie, Indiana.
