James A. Duckham has been selected as the director of public safety at Ball State University. A national search was conducted with finalists interviewed on campus last week.
Duckham brings more than 25 years of professional law enforcement experience to this position including positions at SUNY Dutchess, the town of Greenburgh Police Department in White Plains, New York, the New York City Police Department, and SUNY Purchase. He holds a bachelor of arts from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Fredonia and a juris doctor from the Pace University School of Law.
He has been the assistant director of public safety at Ball State since August 2014. During that time, he has demonstrated exemplary leadership of the department and established strong relationships across the campus.
An advocate of community policing practice, Duckham has improved officer visibility and connections to the university community. He has also established good working relationships with the city and county law enforcement agencies.
"I believe Chief Duckham is the right person to lead the department and will do an outstanding job," said Alan Hargrave, associate vice president for student affairs and director of housing and residence life. "He has demonstrated his passion for his work, his enthusiasm for the department and university, and brings a commendable skill set which should benefit Ball State."
